MATCH REPORT: BORDEAUX 1 CHELSEA 1
What looked a smash-and-grab Chelsea win against the run of play was spoiled by an 82nd minute Bordeaux equaliser, leaving plenty of work still to do in the final group stage game.
Nicolas Anelka had given Chelsea an undeserved second-half lead from his side's first chance but bad defending let the French team draw level and an unhappy close to the game was continued with a red card for Frank Lampard.
Chelsea had found it tough from the start against opposition whose 4-2-3-1 shape was intended to do more than just defend. However a mistake by Laurent Blanc's side just before the hour gave Anelka the chance he needed for his second goal against them in the Champions League and we looked set for February's first knockout stage. However with time running out, it was set-piece vulnerability that put qualification on ice and finishing top in the group is now out of our hands.
There had been just one change to the starting line-up from the Newcastle game, Ballack a natural replacement for suspended Deco.
That meant Branislav Ivanovic began the first Champions League game of his career with fit-again Alex on the bench.
In the opening minutes, Lampard and Joe Cole briefly threatened to work an opening for Anelka, playing as usual as the single central striker with Drogba on the bench.
But it was Bordeaux who worked a keeper first, Cech pushing round a shot from close on 30 yards from left-back Jurietti.
On seven minutes, our keeper was sharp again, this time racing from his line to gather when centre-forward Chamakh looked briefly favourite to make a through ball first.
It was already becoming apparent this would be a much tougher test than the first fixture at Stamford Bridge. The home side's case was being aided by a noisy drumand megaphone-led set of supporters behind the Chelsea goal, all standing in a curved area not unlike the old Shed End terrace.
Chelsea pressed the home side back for a five-minute spell just past the first quarter-of-an-hour but then Cech was in action again, diving to push out an angled shot from Chalmé, the two full-backs getting forward in the manner of our own.
John Terry was booked for becoming involved with Gourcuff after a heavy challenge on the French international on halfway. Gourcuff was also cautioned.
The attacking central midfielder was the next to test Cech, striking well from 20 yards after Ballack had given away the ball. The save was made but instantly, Lampard was booked for a foul on Chamakh in a dangerous position. Thankfully the free-kick was struck high into the cold night sky.
Half-an-hour had passed and still Scolari's men had yet to muster a shot. There were too many fouls for momentum to build and Ashley Cole was the next booked for cutting down Chalmé near the touchline.
A good interchange between Lampard and Malouda looked to have opened the door for Anelka but he was out-fought by his marker. With three minutes to go to the break, Bosingwa turned inside onto a long ball and was inches away from threading it in front of breaking Lampard but the half ended with the visitors yet to work the inexperienced Valverde in the Bordeaux goal - our least impressive 45 minutes of the season so far going forward, over-run in midfield and unable to hold the ball further up.
At the other end, Cech had kept the home side at bay without having to make any truly difficult saves.
The second-half began as it had to, with a raised tempo to the Chelsea play. Suddenly the free-kicks were going our way.
However there was danger on 52 minutes when right-winger Gouffran nipped past Terry but failed to send his cross beyond the covering defence.
Jurietti became the second Bordeaux booking on 54 minutes for chopping down Joe Cole on halfway.
Still though there was little sign of a Chelsea breakthrough and Drogba was stripping down ready to come on. However with eyes turning to the Chelsea defence, Bordeaux committed football suicide.
Under little pressure, a pass was misdirected by Jurietti into Lampard's path and with brilliant reaction speed, the England man knocked the ball first time through to Anelka, onside and all alone.
The striker kept his nerve over the 30-yard run and side-stepped Valverde to finish. Chelsea had scored from our first chance.
Scolari still went ahead with his substitution, Drogba on for the scorer but the next shot was Lampard's - a rocket of a free-kick not too far over.
Lampard on 78 minutes hit a swerving low shot after combining with Ashley Cole that the keeper hurriedly pushed out. Another effort from the same source was goalbound but blocked by a defender.
Chelsea had looked prepared to play out for a 1-0 win but now appeared determined to make sure of victory.
However on 82 minutes came the big blow. Bordeaux won a corner and played it into the near-post where their captain Diarra leapt, completely unmarked, to head in.
Now the cards came out again, Chamakh booked for a foul on Mikel but a minute later Lampard took down Fernando in the Bordeaux half and paid the price with his second yellow of the game. He will miss the group decider against Cluj.
Bordeaux sub Cavenaghi shot just wide on 88 minutes as the home side looked to press home their man advantage.
In stoppage time Bordeaux won another corner, half-cleared and it took Ballack to clear when a ricochet off Ashley Cole threatened to become an own-goal.
And there it ended, the problems away from home in Europe continuing. Roma won away in Romania to go a point ahead in the group and with a head-to-head advantage should we finish level on points with the Italians.
