YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 MEXICO 3
Chelsea's youth team was in Stateside action again on Thursday evening, but were harshly beaten by the Mexican national side.
Coach Paul Clement was pleased with the players' efforts, and felt a sense of injustice at the result after the Blues had taken the lead early on through Danny Philliskirk.
Playing the better football, the Blues were unlucky to concede an equaliser when the Mexicans took advantage of a Chelsea injury to score, a move Clement called 'against the ethics of the game'.
A second Mexican goal from a free-kick saw them sit back and employ some typical spoiling tactics of wasting time and gamesmanship, including six second half substitutions.
Clement opted to throw on Jack Saville up front in a bid to find a leveller, adopting an all-out-attacking 3-3-4 formation, but the young defender was dismissed for a late tackle.
The third goal finally arrived for Mexico when they caught the Blues on the counter-attack to wrap up the win.
'It was a harsh lesson for the boys but a fantastic experience as there was a lot to deal with. A win in our last group game will put us into the final and we hope to play Mexico again,' Clement said.
While they are away, the Academy players and staff have learned their opposition for the FA Youth Cup - Manchester United.
It is a mouth-watering fixture and Clement anticipates a contest of quality.
'You normally hope that we maybe meet teams like that later but if you want to win you have to play these teams. We are excited and I expect a high-level game like the Youth Cup last year against Manchester City,' he said.
There will be more from the youth team in Newark over the weekend as they meet host side St. Benedict's Prep, as well as a forthcoming catch-up with the Academy in the next instalment of The Young Generation.
Chelsea team v Mexico (4-3-3): Jan Sebek; Nikki Ahamed, Rohan Ince (sub Jack Saville), Billy-Joe King, Ben Gordon; Conor Clifford, Jacopo Sala, Josh McEachran; Danny Philliskirk, Frank Nouble, Billy Knott.
